Podcast Show Length: Short vs. Long?
08/20/2010 04:52 PM

I do not believe that length is a big issue at all, but is something that needs to be considered and thought about. Each podcaster needs to determine what his or her goals are for the show – overall format and depth of details covered in the recording will determine the length. You will find that half of your audience will want a short show and the other half will want a long show. So you cannot meet everyones desires.

Make the show length want you think is right for you and consider the value the audience is getting from the show based on the topic focus and segments. Do be concise, but have fun and give some of your personality over time as that creates a deeper personal connection with the audience.

Making the Most Out of Your Podcast
08/26/2010 09:00 AM

Mention podcasting and the image of someone sitting in their basement with a computer and microphone, dreaming of becoming a professional DJ, is what comes to mind for many.  It may surprise you to learn that this emerging technology is actually becoming a mainstream marketing and communication tool for businesses, with the potential to make significant contributions to the bottom line.

Podcasting is simply the act of making radio-quality audio programs available for download through an RSS feed to a computer, MP3 player or other portable media device.  Listeners need only subscribe to a podcast once; afterwards, new content is automatically delivered to them as soon as it becomes available.

Answer: they are all reaching out to staff, students, and customers with a new and powerful tool – podcasting. You may have heard about podcasting from your kids or on the news, but podcasting is much more than some phenomenon started by the rock and roll or techy crowd. Why People Hate Apple
08/14/2010 09:00 AM

Every company has its opponents, but Apple really gets people worked up. Some people hate Apple a lot, more than they hate Nazis or Smurfs. They leave angry comments on Apple blogs. Based on my extensive observations of the species, Apple-haters fall into five categories.

Podcasting Realtors
08/13/2010 09:00 AM

Many agents, brokers and other industry professionals have failed to grasp how podcasting can help their business. So they continue using the same old tried and true techniques and continue to get the same old results. Podcasting enables you to reach a global audience without collecting a single frequent flier mile. Not all property owners live in the state or even country where they own property. While you may not be lucky enough to sell a home for Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, many regular folks in our mobile culture need a trusted professional. A podcast lets you cast a wider net beyond your local market, and for less money than local advertising.

Do you need more evidence? Podcasting is an effective, cost efficient way to reach the most desirable markets. According to the Arbitron/Edison Media Research Internet and Multimedia 2006 survey, 49% of Women and 51% of men surveyed have listened to podcasts. This makes it an effective medium to reach both sexes. The same study also revealed that Podcasters are well educated with 24% holding advanced degrees, and more likely to live in higher income households. As icing on the cake, podcasters click on relevant advertising.

Mayo Clinic Turns to Social Media
08/12/2010 09:00 AM

The Mayo Clinic effort to start a social media center to train physicians and hospitals in the ways of Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and podcasting is one of the biggest signs yet that social media in health care has gone mainstream.

Although no formal studies have outlined proven benefits from using social media, anecdotal evidence of how it has connected physicians and patients -- and the ubiquity of social media use by patients -- is forcing physicians to think about at least dipping a toe into the online pool, experts said.

04/22/2010 09:00 AM

From familiarity to usage to importance, social media is expanding rapidly within the Inc. 500. Corporate business is increasingly recognizing the power and value of social media.

In a report for The Center for Marketing Research at the University of Massachusetts, researchers Nora Barnes and Eric Mattson concluded that the Inc. 500 was outpacing the more traditional and larger Fortune 500 companies in their use of social media, and that social media has penetrated parts of the business world at a tremendous speed.

Their research examined the six kinds of prominent social media--blogging, podcasting, online video, social networking, message boards and wikis. They concluded that social networking had the greatest growth, followed by blogging, and that Twitter in particular was undergoing phenomenal growth. While most companies that responded to the research indicated social media was acceptable in the workplace for employees, less than one-third had formal policies.

Blog vs Podcasting
03/23/2010 09:00 AM

Blog VS. Podcasting
Podcasting has the same features with blog; furthermore, podcasting allows users to produce their own audio even video files of what they saw or what they wish. In this way, audiences no longer need to passively wait for their programme on radio or TV, they have become participants.

However, podcasting cannot easily replace blog, same way as broadcasting did not replace newspaper. The way information is broadcasted by blog is based on personality, sharing and open-ended, same way as podcasting.

But it will take producing, uploading, downloading, receiving and feeding back to complete a podcasting interaction cycle. Due to the long time it takes, it is a bit lack on information sharing. Plus podcasting has a strict gateway, most of the uploaded video will need to be approved by administrator before they come online, not like blog.

As the second generation of blog, podcasting attracts many users because its audio and video content. However, just because it is broadcast by pictures, sound and video, users always have to have high quality broadband supply in order to view smoothly. Compare with podcasting, blog is more convenient.

Radio Personalities Turning to Podcasting
02/24/2010 09:00 AM

People who work in traditional Radio and people who would like to be in Radio all wonder if Internet Radio and Podcasting can be a viable vehicle for careers. I think the answer to this question is slowly evolving into yes, it can.

Writing at washingtonpost.com, Mike Musgrove has a great article about longtime radio pro, Mike OMeara. OMeara lost his on-air gig at 106.7 last year because of a format change. For most of O'Meara's on-air career, losing a radio show would have meant a job hunt and a move to a different market, writes Musgrave.

But, OMeara decided to have a go at Podcasting a show and apparently he is parlaying his 25 years in the Washington, D.C. market into a viable online offering. Read Musgraves article and you will be able to catch more of the details. For pros who have lost their jobs over the past few years and newbies who are looking for a way to get in front of the mike, Podcasting continues to offer a surprising amount of opportunities.

Many webmasters wrestle not only with choosing the best domain name, but also with the decision of what domain extensions to select for their website. The following is a general guide to what the most popular domain extensions represent...

.com - commercial (by far, the most popular domain extension)
.net - network host (often used by hosting companies)

5 Reasons Meredith Thinks Your Podcast Sucks
01/13/2010 09:00 AM

How badly a podcast sucks is highly subjective, and subject mostly to how close you are to either the subject or the producer. This means that if, say, you have a buddy who does a podcast on flight sim games, and you are also a flight sim nut, your opinion of the show will be way more forgiving on it than mine will be.

And not everyone has good taste.

And almost no podcasters are professionals or have pro training or experience in their field or medium.

And almost no podcasters have a budget to procure the right tools.

Why do Most Podcasts Suck?

Using an iPod to Educate
01/12/2010 09:00 AM

These days, it seems a teacher can not turn around without seeing a student with those signature white headphones covertly hanging from his or her ears. Rather than fight the iPod epidemic, teachers can use it to their advantage.

In a 2007 article, the Pew Research Center reported that more than half of American teens own an iPod or MP3 player. The number is up from 1% in 2003 and expected to keep on rising. Since students are spending numerous hours a day listening to their iPods, they can become an invaluable tool for teachers who want to tap into students interests.

Apple offers free educational tools, educator-created lesson plans, downloads, podcasts and more with iTunes U but there are endless possibilities beyond what Apple has to offer.

Web applications, collaboration, and transparency are going to flourish in 2010.

Reflections on the Power of Podcasting
01/07/2010 09:00 AM

When it comes to podcasting as a medium, I am a true believer. No, it never exploded the way microblogging or social networks have, but the number of podcasts, the adoption of podcasting by mainstream media, and the number of listeners continues to grow incrementally, not to mention general public awareness of the medium. I love the idea of niche-oriented shows that appeal to smaller audiences than are required to support radio or television shows. I have become A Podcaster and I just ca not imagine not doing it.

Podcasting Definitions
12/28/2009 09:00 AM

Podcasting is quickly becoming a buzz word among the techie crowd. So what is podcasting, anyway? Podcasting is online audio content that is delivered via an RSS feed. Many people liken podcasting to radio on demand. However, in reality, podcasting gives far more options in terms of content and programming than radio does. In addition, with Podcasting, listeners can determine the time and the place, meaning they decide what programming they want to receive and when they want to listen to it.

At one time it was possible to pass off a podcast created with the barest of tools--the microphone built into a MacBook or iMac and a free audio editing application. While some podcasts are still created that way and succeed almost entirely because of the quality of their content rather than their less-than-pristine production, the world expects better sound from today's podcasts. To produce that better sound, a higher class of tools is necessary. That said, you do not need to bust your bank account to make a podcast with decent sound. Here are some tools we like and recommend.

His latest patent, however, has made Navar a target of scorn. Navar and his current company, VoloMedia of Sunnyvale, have faced unrelenting criticism since announcing in late July that they had been awarded a patent for podcasting. The Making of a Good Podcast
08/05/2009 09:00 AM

There are many, many things that separate a good podcast from all the rest. Here are a few to consider...

Recording Quality
The quality of the recording is probably the most critical component of a podcast. A good podcast is easy to understand, and should be recorded at a volume level that makes it easy for listeners to hear all that is said.

Sound Balance
Adding background music polishes a podcast, but be careful that the music does not overpower the primary content. The background music should be subtle and not distracting. Create a balance that does not compromise the quality of the recording. Also, be sure that the music is not the focal point of a podcast show, unless the topic is about the music -- the emphasis should be on the primary content, and not on the musical arrangements.

Variable iTunes Pricing
06/22/2009 09:00 AM

In April, soon after Apple gave labels the ability to set different prices for their songs on iTunes, every track on Pink Floyds Dark Side of the Moon was raised to $1.29.

Some music fans complained about these price increases, and many technology executives and bloggers proclaimed that labels were making the wrong move. But while sales of individual tracks from Dark Side of the Moon dipped by 11%, album sales remained steady. And all sales combined generated about 12% more revenue in the six weeks after iTunes implemented variable pricing than they did in the six weeks before that.

Understanding the Podcast Audience
06/01/2009 09:00 AM

One in four Americans have downloaded and watched or listened to an audio or video podcast, according to a new study presented online last week by Tom Webster of Edison Research and the Association for Downloadable Media. Awareness of podcasting is up - from 37% to 43% - and Webster says that means it's mainstream.

In this 4th annual study of Podcasts, Arbitron Edison found that Internet and broadband access are widespread, a factor thats contributing to increased consumption of podcasts. Defining podcasts as audio or video digital files, the study makes the distinction that podcasting refers to the download of program-oriented online audio-video such as talk shows or hosted music programs, usually as an automatic download that can be listened to at the user's convenience. It does not refer to the download of songs or mp3 files.

Skilled communicators understand the type of planning required in order to pull off a clean final product. The most memorable and effective podcasts are always well planned. Some of the best podcast shows use a script and follow a structured format. The preparation that occurs behind the scenes is similar to what would take place for a radio show.

RSS to HTML Script Updated
01/02/2009 09:00 AM

NotePage, Inc. released a new version of their popular RSS2HTML script. RSS2HTML is a free PHP script that converts RSS feeds into HTML web pages. The RSS2HTML script allows webmasters to easily display RSS feeds on their websites.

The content of the RSS feeds can be easily integrated into an existing website's theme using the rss2html.php script. The rss2html.php script parses the RSS feed, extracts the pertinent information, formats it, and outputs it as regular HTML.

Using RSS2HTML webmasters can customize the format and look of the web page created from the RSS feed. The content of the RSS feed can be easily integrated into an existing website's theme. The webpages will always display the most current information from the RSS feed, and because the resulting page is pure HTML, it will be in a format friendly to search engine robots. The RSS2HTML script runs on any webserver that can run PHP scripts and supports feeds in the RSS 2.0, .93, .92, .91, or .90 format.

Additional details and a download for a free php script can be found at http://www.feedforall.com/free-php-script.htm

The new RSS2HTML script is available from NotePage, Inc., makers of the popular RSS feed creation software, FeedForAll. FeedForAll software enables webmasters to create, edit, manage and publish RSS feeds. RSS has evolved into a popular means to syndicate headlines and distribute content on the Internet. A free fully-functional 30-day trial of FeedForAll is available for download from http://www.feedforall.com

Podango Struggling
12/30/2008 09:00 AM

Podango is struggling. Podcast hosting can be an expensive proposition. The following was emailed to Podangos customers this weekend:

We at Podango believe that you, our customers, are our most valuable asset. Given this belief, we have always done our best to be honest and forthright in our dealings with you. The current uncertainties of the financial market has affected many of us in this nation. As of this morning, Podango is no longer immune to it’s effects. Our ability to continue operations past the end of this year (2008) is in question. We do not want any of you, or any of your shows to be negatively affected by this uncertainty and so we are encouraging you to begin taking all necessary steps to secure your data or begin moving to another hosting provider. On Monday we will have a more definitive direction. As of today, the last day to move or secure your data is December 31st. RSS feeds will need to be redirected by this date as well. It is our hope that the events of the next few days will allow us to continue providing you a service based upon a subscription fee. Again, we will know more on Monday and you will be notified of any changes to the above plan as soon as we are made aware of them. We do apologize for the short notice during a time when many of you are very busy, and didn’t plan on spending this much time on your shows.

We will have a link in the My Podango section of the Podcasters login page by Monday which will allow you to redirect your RSS feed off of the Podango feed to a new feed. Instructions will accompany that tool. Also on Monday we will provide you with alternatives for show hosting.

Inactive accounts, those without recent uploads or downloads, may be already been deleted from the system. If you need to contact us, please use info@podango.com.

Again I personally apologize for this notice of caution. We truly appreciate your business.

    Doug

Unfortunately they are not giving much notice, for podcasters to move to alternative platforms. Perhaps a reason to manage ones own hosting?

Futurewatch 2009: Big Opportunities, Big Challenges in Educational Video
12/22/2008 09:00 AM

The trajectory of educational video typically follows that of the outside world. But with education, the goals of popularity, audience size, and hits take a back seat to learning effectiveness—at least that’s what we strive for. The questions for educators are to what extent do we follow the trends and how do we make sure that it’s not a snipe hunt or a wild-goose chase.

The runaway success of the iPhone and the rise of the inexpensive, ultraportable laptop netbook and other wireless devices make it clear that we live in a mobile world defined by access to information unbound by location. Mobile is clearly the next frontier for online media, and, therefore, it is also the next step for educational media.

Frankly, educational media is already there, to some extent. Podcasting is really the technology that launched mobile educational media, such that countless schools and universities have gone online with thousands of podcasted lectures and classes. Companies that focus on education, such as Apple, Sonic Foundry, and Accordent, have all rolled out tools making podcasting easier. But does making a podcast of a 1-hour lecture for a students iPod really count as mobile media?
